Unicorn birthday party ideas without the glitter cleanup

Unicorn parties are mostly a colour scheme, which is good news: you can do almost all of it with paper and food dye.

The plan

Two hours of unicorn party

Food

  • Rainbow fruit skewers. They are the cheapest decoration in the room and the only vegetable-adjacent thing kids eat.
  • White frosting with four drops of food colouring swirled once — do not mix it in.
  • Pink lemonade in a dispenser. It photographs well and it costs nothing.

Decorations

  • Pastel balloons in a rough arch over the doorway, uneven on purpose.
  • Paper plates in four colours instead of one. It reads as deliberate.
  • Skip loose glitter. It gets into carpets and it is still there in March.

One thing that isn’t a screen

Horn headbands the kids decorate as they arrive — it absorbs the awkward first ten minutes.

What usually goes wrong

Unicorn parties skew young, and a room of five-year-olds needs shorter turns than you think. Switch the arcade to the Little Kids profile before anybody sits down.

A running order that works

  1. 0:00–0:20

    Arrival

    Guests trickle in over twenty minutes. Have the on-arrival activity out and the TV showing the attract screen.

  2. 0:20–0:45

    The activity

    One thing off the screen, with a clear end. Twenty-five minutes is the ceiling.

  3. 0:45–1:00

    Cake

    Sing, cut, hand it out. Do not do this at the start; sugar first is a mistake you make once.

  4. 1:00–1:40

    The tournament

    Five games on the TV, four kids at a time, names entered once. This is the loudest and easiest forty minutes of the party.

  5. 1:40–2:00

    Wind down

    Free play on the console, party bags by the door, parents arriving. The screen keeps everyone in one room while you hand out bags.
